Joint Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Assessment and Treatment Planning
At the Banana Tree Practice we are fortunate to be able to offer joint assessment and treatment planning. In our experience, we consider this to be of great benefit to those children with more complex needs which cross over both Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy skill bases.
This may include children with:
This may include children with:
- Neuro-developmental conditions such as cerebral palsy
- Coordination difficulties such as developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and dyspraxia
- Global developmental delay
- Acquired Brain injury
Traditionally, Occupational Therapists focus on functional independence skills and fine-motor skills whilst Physiotherapists work on gross motor skills and mobility. In practice, many impairments will cross over all these areas and a broader perspective can be advantageous. With input from both therapists throughout the assessment and treatment planning stage, we are able to provide a more holistic and comprehensive view of your child’s difficulties and needs, which in turn ensures a more streamlined and effective service for you and your child. By working together, we also avoid duplication of assessment and history taking and reduce the amount of handling and observation the child undergoes.

Following assessment, both therapists will be able to discuss your child’s needs, with you, to determine the best way forward. Should treatment intervention be requested, we would discuss how best to provide the therapy required ensuring the most appropriate input at any given time. A single therapist will usually provide treatment sessions, but a combination of both therapies may be offered, depending on the need. This doesn’t mean that your child will require more therapy, just the right therapy at the right time.
